Introduction to ArcGIS Using ArcView 8.3
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology has applications in practically every field, and people who know how to work with it are in demand in today's highly competitive job market. Learn how to take advantage of this powerful technology with Introduction to ArcGIS using ArcView 8.3. This two-day workshop will provide you with a hands-on opportunity to begin using the world's most popular GIS software.
This two-day workshop, sponsored by the Syracuse University Library, will be held at the E.S. Bird Library on the campus of Syracuse University on:

Description of the Workshop: This two-day workshop will give you the instruction you need to put ArcView to work for you right away. Through a series of instructor-led demonstrations and hands-on exercises, you will learn how to use ArcView to display, edit, query, and analyze geographic data, as well as display and edit maps and charts.
Who Should Attend: ArcView is designed for and used by engineers, planners, public utility managers, marketing professionals, public safety personnel, natural resource managers, academic professionals, and others who work with maps and other forms of geographic data.
Hands-on exercises: Each participant will have their own computer to use in exploring the software and completing the exercises included in the workshop.
Materials: You will also receive a 538-page introductory text and a CD-ROM with exercise data and a FREE 180-day trial copy of ArcGIS software.
Your Instructor is: Nicholas Colas has more than twenty years of experience in the use of geographic information systems. Over the last twelve years he has successfully taught hundreds of students how to utilize GIS tools and techniques. Since 1995 his teaching has focused primarily on ArcView, which he uses extensively in his work as an employee of the Cayuga County Planning Department.
Daily Schedule 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
First day topics will include:
- Getting to know GIS
- Getting started with maps and Data: Exploring ArcMap and ArcCatalog
- Displaying Data: Symbolizing and classifying features and rasters, Labeling features
- Getting information about features: Quering data, Joining and relating tables
Second day topics will include:
Enrollment is Limited to 15 participants.
- Analyzing feature relationships: Selecting features by location, Preparing data for analysis, Analyzing spatial data, Projecting data in ArcMap
- Creating and editing data: Building a geodatabase, creating features, editing features and attributes, geocoding addresses
- Presenting data: Making maps quickly, Making maps for presentation

$575 Government/Educational/non-profit - After 4pm 5/27/2004Refunds: Those who wish to withdraw or cancel from either workshop must do so by giving written notice five (5) business days before the workshop is scheduled to start in order to obtain a full refund. Any cancellation after five days prior to the beginning of the workshop will be charged a $75 cancellation fee. No refunds will be granted after 4:00pm on the previous day before the workshop starts. Full registration refunds will be given if the workshop you have registered for has been cancelled. SU Library reserves the right to cancel any workshop in the event if there are insufficient registrations received.
