Government Information SUBJECT GUIDE

   Government Publications

The maps and government information collection includes all kinds and formats of government publications and maps. S.U. Library has been part of the federal depository program since 1878. We currently select 70% of all documents available to depository libraries. Our other government publications include:

  • New York State depository materials since 1951
  • Documents from the Council of Europe, United Nations, Great Britain, Canada
  • Selected items from Onondaga County and the city of Syracuse.
The collection includes over 500,000 paper items, thousands of items in electronic format, over 4,000 CD-ROMS and DVDs, and over 1 million microfiche. Materials are located in the Department, Bird Library main stacks, the Science and Technology Library, and the Geology library. Records for most government publications appear in the SUMMIT Catalog. Some geologic and soil survey maps are housed in the Science and Technology Library. The Special Collections Department houses many older New York State maps and atlases. More on Maps and GIS

GIS (Geographic Information Systems)

Numeric Data Services

The Numeric Data Librarian assists Library users with locating and analyzing data, with data management and analysis, use of statistical software (e.g. SAS, Stata, SPSS), and provides advice on research methods, study design, and questionnaire construction. The Library's data software is available in the G-SIC. More on Numeric Data Services

G-SIC (Geographic and Statistical Information Center)

The G-SIC is located across the hall from the MGI Reference Desk, in room 348. It has 6 workstations, 24" monitors, CD and DVD burners, a 36" width color plotter, high quality large format scanners, and specialized software. The Center is for SU and ESF students, faculty, and staff. More on the G-SIC

MGI Circulation Policies

  • Congressional reports or other Serial Set publications
  • Hearings from the current Congress
  • Aerial Photographs
  • Reference materials
  • Atlases
  • Restricted maps
Loan periods vary depending on a patron's academic status. S.U. faculty have one year; S.U. graduate students one semester; S.U. undergraduates 4 weeks.
